Happy, happy, joy, Joy

Hello and good day to you and all the visitors to this blog! Welcome visitors from Myammar (first time!), Portugal, Nigeria, Netherlands, France, Indonesia, Canada, India and the USA! Those are just a few but really, thank you for opening my words and photos into your space. Thank you to all of you bloggers out there that share a little piece of your world, brain and heart with the world. I really am thankful for all these little interactions even as minute as they may be. Where ever in the world you were yesterday, I hope that it was a beautiful day for you and yours.

Yesterday was a holiday, Thanksgiving. We stayed in and I made chicken soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. It was was the best, really. This holiday has never been one I looked forward to, well, maybe when I was a kid and I would sneak into the kitchen to steal yeast rolls, fresh out of the oven. It was worth it to get caught by my Mom just to be the first one to taste her perfect rolls. Anyhow, I did feel like cooking something special for Hubby and I, in honor of the day. So, I cooked a few mini apple pies and made fresh vanilla ice cream.

Now to get ready for our upcoming family dinner. I almost have the menu planned. Yeah, menu. My boys will be here for a few days and I want to make sure that we get all the shopping done so Hubby and I can spend time with the kids instead of having to make trips to the market for forgotten items. So far, I know that I will be making turkey tamales. Most likely, I will be grilling something and making salsa and fresh bread and tortillas. There is an appetizer I am going to try making and that is a deconstructed cheese sandwich fondue. I plan on using day old sour dough, slicing into sticks (think French toast sticks) and then brushing with a little butter and then broiling in oven to get it toasty. Jeepers. I really miss the salamander from the restaurant as it would be perfect in getting the bread just right. I picture the bread arranged on a small platter the fondue would be a combo of cheddar and parm or brie. To make it fancy I am thinking swirl in a little tomato soup for color. As I mentioned in a previous post, I have found the joy in cooking that I lost when I stopped working at that restaurant in Monrovia. I don’t know how long this will last so I got run with it.

Just what the walls needed.

The weather has been holding at a comfortable level and I have been spending more time in the studio. Finally, what ever the block was in my head that kept me from doing much decorating in this place has lifted. This week, I organized my my area and put paintings on the wall. Also I started working on a few paintings that are cover-ups of paintings that did not go as planned.

This is inspired from the morning view from the studio.

Lately, I have been trying to learn how to paint landscapes. The mountains here in the Coachella Valley are great to use as there are so many colors and shadows depending on the time of day you are viewing them. The painting up above is inspired by the view from my desk and is in progress. Hope to get it finished soon.

You would never know that there is coffee stain on this canvas. Lucky for me, coffee does not bleed through the paint so covering it up was a breeze. I wish I could say getting faces just right was a breeze, I have lots more practice till I figure out my own personal style. The painting is not quite done yet and is drying before I can do some touch-up work. More updates to come.

Today is the first day of the Christmas Shopping season. I did start my Christmas shopping, online, this morning. I can honestly say that I have not been in a department store on Black Friday since I used to work at Walmart back in late 1990s. Just the thought of Christmas shopping makes my heart race and my palms moisten. Not only did I work at Walmart and survived Christmas 2 seasons. I won’t get into my tour of duty that I did at the customer service desk of a long gone KMart in Monrovia, CA back in the 80’s, but maybe this is the reason I have not favored Christmas. Hopefully, I can pull it together to get through the shopping but know that I may not end up getting the gifts that I intended to buy. Oh Joy!

    Your thanksgiving soup looks positively delicious and comforting! I’m glad you and hubby found your own way to celebrate and I could dig right into your little apple pies! It’s fun to read about you reclaiming joy in the kitchen. 🥰

    I love seeing your wall of paintings, you have a nice color sense and it looks like the portraits capture a sense of that person. Turkey tamales and fondue sticks – yumm!
