Good morning. I was, but I wasn’t, but I did, I came here today on May 5th, 2020. Not sure why, like there was going to be some magical reason or something. I will stop right there as that is my right. As it is my right to wake and bake every morning. As it is my right to protest and such. All I know is that I am blessed to open my eyes and breath. Here in the Coachella Valley, we all have rights, rights to live and to try and feed our families. Please be kind, please use your common sense. I think most of our Mothers and Grama’s taught us if we nothing nice to say, then to say nothing at all. Speaking of our Mother’s and Grama’s and Dr. Fauci, wear a mask when out in public, please. I was about to go on a tangent and then realized that I need a taco…life is so much better with salsa.

My friend, Morishige (using screen name) introduced me to the sounds of Khruangbin a few days ago. I really listened to them this morning and this stuff is legit. It flows, it ebbs and that sound coming out of bass player Laura Lee’s SX Vintage Series Jazz Electric Bass is beyond divine. The tone screamed Fender all day before I had even seen it or looked up her stats. It was unmistakable. Then when I did more research, I find out that she pairs it with a Fender Bass 10 tube amp. In my head I am thinking old 60’s and 70’s rock because of that tone. That girl knows her stuff. Here is one more gem to take for a test ride. Press play…
So, yesterday I tried to wax my own eye brows. Oh yeah. Oh no!! Like hair, they will grow back. My left side is a little “chola” style and my right side is little Brooke Shields. Heck, I am just glad I am no longer rockin’ that monobrow that I usually do. I love Frida Kahlo and remember fondly hanging out at this cool coffee shop in West Hollywood back in the early 2000s with a group of my guy friends called Little Frida’s and they were the ones that coaxed me into plucking my brows as I had never once plucked my brows before then. I think that this kid that I took in, plucked my eyebrows for the first time. They were a shaggy mess and yes, I did resemble Frida a bit. During that time I also used to wear my hair in a bandanna, all the time, to keep my wild mane tame. I was truly a mess. Hmmm, no wonder I often got stereo-typed as this and that from time to time. Anyhow, if you follow me on IG, I throw out those little pics in the stories every once in a while. I like playing games, sorry guys, just me. (By the way, I am still lost in the music of Khruangbin and it is heavenly….) I wonder what happened to Jonathon as his parents never approved of his lifestyle and dream of becoming the next Mariah Carey.

Howdy! I’m so happy that you write something about Khruangbin. Surprisingly, they don’t have that much followers. I wonder why. The other day, I watched a YouTube video where they were asked about their musical influence. At first I thought the sound of the guitar was inspired by Thai’s music, but Speer the guitarist told that the sound came from some Vietnamese music. I dunno, but their music sounds to be fit in many genres, like Spanish or Mexican or Country, even Western.
The first time I hear the name Frida Kahlo was when we watched Coco, the movie about el dia de los muertos. And when I browsed about her on the internet, I was like…. Wow! Her life was so poignant. And her artworks seem to resemble her life experience. I guess I’m gonna seek more information about Kahlo. 🙂

Yeah, they actually have a huge following on Instagram. 231 thousand! Followers! Wow! Yeah, I listened all morning till hubby came home from work. It is very international for sure. You can hear many influences. Inspired by Vietnamese music? Very cool! All I know is I was dancing around my house all day to it! Great for exercising.
I have never seen Coco! I should see it! I learned about her in college. We were studying her husband Diego Rivera, a muralist. I was taking an art history class. I fell head over heel in love with her! I went to the library and checked out every book I could about her. My first husband kind of resembled Diego Rivera, no kidding. He was dark and had curly hair. Not the reason I chose him but a friend pointed that out years later. Ha ha!!! My hair was never quite as long as hers and I was never an artist like her although I wish I was. I loved her because she was disabled like me. I just had a stroke when I was learning about her in 1992 and was learning how to walk again. 🙂

It’s an animation and it’s pretty cool. The soundtracks are lovely too. There’s a guy character in the movie who dresses like Frida Kahlo. 😀 Since the movie is quite funny, I thought Frida Kahlo was some comedian or something. But I’m dead wrong. 😀 If I’m not mistaken, the death of Diego Rivera was the thing that really changed her, wasn’t it?

That is probably true. However, youtube music is getting much better than spotify in my opinion. I am thinking about subscribing so I can get rid of the ads. I am not working right now so I had to cut out music subscriptions so until I can afford those luxuries again. 🙂
I think I will watch the cartoon. Maybe it’s on Amazon Prime. Frida Kahlo is an icon. In my mind I think she was a comedian and from what I read she had a sense of humor although it may have been a little dark.
The thing that changed her was the accident that left her disabled. DIego was a horrible man. Vile and disgusting. I hated him. Really. He was a brilliant artist. He had many lovers, but so did Frida. Thank goodness for that! Do some research, you may like her too.

For me, it is. The song library is great you can even find old, root blues music. But I guess Spotify are more comfy for people because it seems more mobile.
If she’s kind of comic, then what they do in the movie Coco is not mocking her at all. Was he? Yeah, I guess that’s the dark side of an artist… It’s ironic when pain usually is the muse of artists.
I’m gonna look facts and stories about her. It’s gonna be really really interesting. 🙂

Yeah, I am getting a little too comfortable with spotify. Youtube is raw and gritty. I love the recording of the fans. Those are the best. These are from people that love the music and are trying to get their favorite song or parts.
Frida is an icon in the lesbian community. In the 90’s when I started following or idolizing her, my lesbian sister asked me if I to was “family” and I said, “I’m not sure, I like everybody”. Still true. Yeah, pain brings out a little of something in everyone, the person in pain or the caregiver. Yeah, I use my pain to create. I am sure many others do as well.
Yes, do look her up and Leon Trotsky…very cool stories about her and him…

Have fun with her as I did. She had an amazing life and she was disabled during a time when they had limited aids for people with disabilities.

Yeah, pretty interesting stuff. There is a story about a mural that was commission for a Chicago exhibition that Diego worked on. If find the story you see that it was during the Cold War and I think they destroyed the mural because of Rivera’s (alleged) ties to communism. Sorry, I like history too. I really am a nerd.

You are so right! I took a history of rock and roll class in college. It was one of the best courses. It got into the basics. Way back, the foundation, before the Beatles, before Cash. Yeah, it’s one thing to pick up an instrument and play it like a game and play well but have no soul.

So cool! It makes me recollect the time when I was curious about jazz (thanks to the Beatles jazz cover bands) and traced the history back to ragtime. Music genre is like a tree, isn’t it. You can always find the roots.

Yeah, often when I am listening to music I can hear a riff or a line from someone else’s music mixed into the newer music. I will use Van Morrison as an example. He is heavily blues influenced like Muddy Waters and Leddbelly and you can hear it in the composition. He doesn’t hide it. He honors it. Country and Rock walk that fine also. I really should have been a music major. Hopefully, it is not too late. I have been out side taking photographs of plants. Have to wait for hubby to order parts for guitar 🙂

Yeah. It’s like the music is passed from one generation to another. And these days many pop songs even rip notes from old music. If I’m not mistaken, there’s an Ariana Grande’s song that sounds pretty much like “My Favorite Things.”

Hello there and good afternoon! It has been a long, weekend! Hope you had some fun these past few days. There are many songs that sample others work. Funny but on the way home, we were listening to Howard Stern tell a story about Little Richard and his songs being sung by Pat Boone. Then he went on to talk about how one of the greatest drum riffs – the start of Rock n Roll by Led Zep was based on a riff from the Little Richard song “Keep A-Knockin'”. Pretty cool.
Thanks for your encouragement, it helps tremendously. I got to see my kids yesterday. IT was the best. I got to sneak a secret hug to my son Karl.

Yeah, there are lots of bugs that need to be worked out.. I have been spending time on the phone with technical support. THey are trying to fix that for me that is why I am keeping the blog on wordpress for right now. Yeah, I pay that service so they need do something for me ha ha!

Sometimes they do it so subtly that people don’t notice them. When I was in secondary school, there’s a song by Crazy Town titled Butterfly whose riff is ripped from a short interlude of a Red Hot Chili Pepper’s song. I forgot the RHCP song but it was only a tiny part that nobody cared. 😀

I recently discovered Khruangbin when a friend told me about their song “Texas Sun”. I’m already a big fan of Leon Bridges, so fell in love with the song, and have gotten into their other music as well.
